I think Ronin put a very good point forward. Pity I can't +1 posts. I'll give 'im some karma instead.

* goes back to try to break the suspected code in Ronin's last post *

He almost always starts a new thread when he gets news. However, he's now just a contractor for the company that bought the game. Perhaps he no longer has authority to inform us about the game's progress anymore?

He stated that things will be completely out of his hands once all the papers were signed. For now it's just the waiting game, which could be days, weeks...even years.

I evacuated to RoM as well, and the comparison between it and EE is stark.

RoM's a purely mechanical game, full of crunchy systems to try to optimize. If you like mastering rules, working the numbers and building your statistics, RoM's a great game for you. However, its setting and story are (to put it kindly) generic and uninspired. I have yet to meet anyone interested enough in Taborea to bother roleplaying. And if you don't thrive on crunchy mechanics, the intricacies of doing anything well there could be less fun. The really big up-front download (7GB!) really makes a difference you can see in the graphical detail of the game. I particularly like the idling animations of many of the mobs and pets.

EE's strengths were its setting and story -- the systems were just barely adequate to be playable. I'm not sure whether it was by design or merely a necessary property of the not-quite-finished beta period, but compared to RoM I now find EE positively elegant for the stuff it left out. Weapons with a clear, simple DPS rating. Armor with a clear, simple defense rating. No ongoing repair costs for equipment. No ongoing ammunition costs for projectile weapons. If a detail wasn't actually fun, EE was pretty good about leaving it out. You'd certainly never call it "bloated".

People often make the mistake that MORE is BETTER. It's not. Certainly people who have played a game out will crave any addition, but one poorly researched one can be lethal to it, especially ones that mistake tedium for gameplay. (I'm looking at YOU, crafting/havesting systems for most MMOs!)

Anyway, it's been a month since this announcement. We've pretty much covered everything there is to talk about regarding this topic until the new owners sanction some more news about progress. So I'm locking this thread and moving the continuing discussion to http://ee.k5p.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=586. Hope we have another announcement thread like this sooner than later.
