Previously, GM Fangren talked about Ikimonogatari.
The Dogs have always had a habit of spreading good news the moment it is heard.
You are probably unaware of this,
but they truly love humans.

Speaking of which, about Ikimonogatari...
Before I can discuss that, I must first tell you about this world.

There are all kinds of living things on the earth.

Do you know how many kinds there are?

N-No, no, I was not dozing!
Being nocturnal, I only feel energetic as you do in the middle of the night!

Ah yes, that's right, the number of species...

There are 2 million species known,
and if you include unknown species, there are 10 million or even 100 million.
Quite a few. More species than I have feathers, I might add.

The earth consists of all these living things.

However, even those that stood at the top of the food chain
could not escape the sudden and drastic change.
Within several hundreds of years, numerous species were decimated.

Soon afterwards, all living things were completely destroyed.

Hoo?

Why were they destroyed, you ask?

Hoot, that is a topic for another time...

And then, those same species that were wiped out once again returned
to this world and repopulated the earth in vast numbers.

The land that humans once called Spain
was now home to the cities of the most cunning, clever, and intelligent eagles,
while the strong and honorable Deer built their armies in Great Britain.

The Cats sought refuge in their hometown of Germany,
as the wandering Sylvans transformed Paris into lush forests of green.

It is this world.

A "story" of "living things."

I am the translator who tick-tocks every day,
working to make Ikimonogatari, formerly Earth Eternal,
into a game more friendly to Japanese users.

Those who first played the English version
may already be aware of this,
but in Earth Eternal,
the history that embodies itself as the game's setting is the story they call "folklore."
It is there that all events since the earth's creation have been recorded.

It may seem that you will enjoy the game more without this backstory,
but only because I cannot properly tell you the folklore,
so I have been racking this hard head of mine.
It's just that, this... 145-page PDF text is so...


For example, there's this story about the Cats...

Not only is translating difficult,
but finding a way to tell this long story
without boring all of you is proving to be a problem.

My colleagues have given me many different ideas,

Loving the Appeal of Animals ?!


ImageThis is Ikimonogatari's design lead, Bouncer of the rabbitfolk.

Happy new year!! This is the year of the rabbit, which makes it my year~!

White: I'm not just the design lead for Ikimonogatari, but a Japanese illustrator.

To obtain a collaboration with a CGI company to create designs to appeal to the Japanese, I've been put in charge of remodeling the 'characters' 3D models and such.

Given that Ikimonogatari is set in a world where animals have taken over after the fall of humankind, this is an important duty - the backbone of the game.

So I've been thinking about ways to make the fun-loving animal races in images that would be to Japanese tastes.

How am I supposed to make 'animal' characters that'll appeal to everyone~??"

I pestered the illustrators with questions like that, and after some trial and error, this is what came out.

After thinking about these Japanese-style characters, the one thing that emerged as most profound was the idea of 'folklore'...

Not moe-moe characters, and not the Western-style realistic ones - this just felt right.
(* Translation Note: Moe-Moe is usually a feeling attributed to a sense of protectiveness over a vulnerable character.)

Additionally, I've been thinking about the appeal of expressing the animals' unique inborn traits.

Now, you might be thinking - what's with this 'appeal of animals' all of a sudden?

Let me show you what I mean with a picture of an ordinary animal.

This is a candid photo of my rabbit, Puu-chan.

It's very different from the usual kind of appeal, but that instant when she stands up on her hind legs, stretched out - that kind of image is the appeal I'm talking about. She's very shy, but once I get a chance I'll publish a picture of that.

Comparing Japanese and foreign tastes in character design and how they differ is very difficult.

...But rabbits being cute is one thing the whole world agrees on - doesn't matter if you're foreign or domestic.

In Ikimonogatari, too, I'm aiming to make characters that will certainly appeal to everyone, and I hope there'll be many guests who think that way.

So - my goal for this year is to make characters that aren't merely 'cute', but appealing.

The other sages will introduce themselves soon!

Returning to the Homelands:

The homelands of the races of the characters has been set in IKIMONOGATARI.

For example, the Bears are of German descent, with courage, power, and determination.

The Tanuki resides in France. It is cheerful prankster and pacifistic. (Translator Note: Raccoon and Tanuki tend to be interchangible, though the species are actually only cosmetically similar. Tanuki are canines with very raccoon-like markings, whereas actual Raccoons are more cousin to bears.)

The owl is Greek. Every detailed point is wisely researched by their very nature.

The rabbit is Irish. When their areas are attacked, they counterattack ferociously though it seems easy-going.

You will be intrigued by how each race's animal characteristic overlaps with the national character in each country!

the creatures also have a long history of their own as well, specific to the game world.

Japanese localization will done based on these details.

In our world, carnivores and herbivores have changed their usual eating habits.
Cats, despite their adorable little faces, are carnivores. You might think that we Dogs are omnivores, but being essentially wolves, we are also carnivorous.
Deer and Rabbits are herbivores, as eating habits vary with each race.

But it seems that humans are the only race that has both carnivores and herbivoresImage
what's more, I think the number of herbivores is increasing! Humans sure are strange.

Before I go on about herbivores, there are these things called "vegetarians" that apparently only eat vegetables, but I won't go into that because I don't really know much about themImage
Sorry, I hate studying. Next time I'll pay more attention when Mr. Noc is lecturing.

These seem to be the traits humans associate with herbivoresImage
(that I know of)

-They don't like fighting and want everyone to get along
-They're listeners in every aspect
-They don't scold their subordinates or juniors
-They'd much rather be in love than look good

So what did reading those sentences accomplish?

Maybe you thought, "Oh, so I'm actually an herbivore," and now you're on the lookout for any cute little carnivorous cats that might eat you!
Or rather, perhaps you've adopted the "I'm just waiting to be devoured" herbivorous mindsetImage

Even if you make an herbivorous character, see if you have what it takes to make a carnivorous animal.
I'm sure it'll be really fun to step out of reality and play as a carnivore for a changeImage

Good evening, I'm GM Foxen.

As Ikimonogatari's head web designer, I've been constantly improving the site's design.

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how I can reflect the incredible world of Ikimonogatari in the website.

Personally, I'd prefer a simple site that uses images in place of walls of text, but the website of an online game isn't just a promotional site trying to sell the game. You can't just think, "If it's pretty then it's OK!" It is essential to have a news section with announcements, notices, maintenance reports, and other information.

Still, the site should not be cluttered when including all that information, and moreover, it should entice people to play the game.
I want to make the game introduction page really appealing to everyone, whether you want to enjoy the world of Ikimonogatari by yourself or with other players.
These are the kinds of thoughts swirling in my head.

I hope you look forward to the website as much as the game.

In addition to all the animals in Ikimonogatari, there are Demons like me.

and if you're as cool and stylish as I am, then you have the true heart of a Demon.
We even have a Demon who's into sumo wrestling; whatever floats your boat, I guess.

So about Ikimonogatari,
it takes place on an earth where the species known as humans does not exist.
But why did humans perish while animals and other creatures flourished?
This will become clear as you progress through the storyline.
Besides, it's one of those things you'd have to see for yourself to believe.

This is a little sudden, but...Image
What would you see if you were to visit a world where animals replaced humans?

The picture at the top of this blog and on the teaser site reflect this thought
and is my idea of a typical day in their lives.
Thinking about how they live their lives is where I take my inspiration.

I was eating with somebody one day when I suddenly had one of those light bulb moments.
It occurred to me that animals probably enjoy themselves most when they're eating.
And so I decided that rather than depicting a raging battle,
it would be better to have this moment of contrast where even in the aftermath of human destruction, all these animals are under the Eiffel Tower eating, drinking, and partying. Image

Then I started unconsciously noticing other people's eating habits. Image
Not just what they were eating, but how they were eating, too.
Seeing people skilled at using chopsticks made me go, "Whoa, so refined!"
and children eating pasta with their hands made me go, "Ew, gross... but the food must be good~"

You probably won't see the animals living in a savage world of predators and prey, but I'm sure that they all have their respecting eating habits.

Anyway,
I've been adjusting the animals' sizes and figures today. Image
I'm making sure that the proportions of stuff like heads and bodies are balanced,
but I'd like to introduce a favorite character of mine, Mr. Longtail ImageImage

he trains tirelessly to become the greatest archer in the city.

I'm Chris Turner, Art Director for Earth Eternal, and I wanted to tell you a bit about myself and our game.
Born in Canada, I'm now in the United States with my wife, son, and two cats.
I'm a classically trained animator with 16 years experience working in Video games at places like Lucas Learning, Stormfront Studios, and Toys for Bob.
Art, Animation, and Video Games have always been passions of mine, and
I try to bring that passion to everything I do in Earth Eternal.
To make it a better and more enjoyable experience for you, the player!

I wanted to share with you some of the exciting things about our game prior to it's exciting Japanese release!

We've all been working very hard to make the game exciting and engaging for new and old players alike.
I'm particularly excited about the visual styles that bringing Earth Eternal to Japan has allowed us to explore.
From the design of the characters and environments, to the addition of beginning player dungeons that even beginning players can enjoy!
Once through the starting areas, the players will be exposed to a large open game world to explore and conquer.

It's my goal to make Earth Eternal visually unique and appealing to all types of gamers.
You can expect diverse areas, with more refinements to come as we continue production.
It's my hope you all will enjoy the challenges, adventures, and friendships that Earth Eternal will bring you.

"Hi, I’m David Hanson and I’m working as an Associate Producer on Earth Eternal.
Unlike the rest of the development team I’m new to the game, having only recently come on board to help get everything ready for the imminent launch in Japan.

The first thing that struck me about the game was just how much time and effort the development team have spent crafting an MMO they believe in, and how passionate they all are about games and what they do.
These guys have invested years into building a game from the ground up and have created a really fresh take on the genre that looks beautiful and has a unique charm.

The role of a producer on a game is a varied one and no day is really ever the same.
A lot of my time is spent on the less glamorous side of making a game- things people don’t really think about when they’re playing a title.
The budgeting, making time lines, project management, documentation and daily dealings with everyone involved on the project.
The producer tends to be the person that has contact with everyone, both internally and externally, and is the go-to person whenever there’s a problem that needs a solution.
Logistics are also a big part of the job, so everything from booking hotel rooms and flights for people involved on the project to negotiating funding and bringing in new members of staff are all part of the job.
It usually involves lots of phone calls and meetings between the various stake holders, so my inbox tends to fill up a lot quicker than other people involved on the game, and that’s how it should be.
I try to make sure that the guys who are really making the game can spend as much of their time doing just that, and that they are shielded as much as possible from all the other stuff that making a game involves.
After all, when you’ve got a small engineering team working flat out coding a game you don’t want them distracted by an excel spreadsheet or having to deal with purchasing licenses or negotiating third party relations.

That’s not to say that I don’t love games and don’t try to contribute what I can to the game itself.
I’ve always been an avid player of games, and I consider myself really fortunate to have gone straight from college into a job at SEGA working on a Football MMO (Football Manager Live).
I then went to work for Eidos on Championship Manager, another football game that’s also had worldwide success.
We were bought by Square Enix, which proved a great experience as within a couple of years of working in the industry.
I had met some of my childhood heroes who had created the games I grew up playing.
Having the opportunity to work on the release of an RPG in Japan is therefore something of an accomplishment for me.
I like the way that Earth Eternal brings together traditional RPG influences from both Eastern and Western influences, and I really hope gamers in Japan enjoy immersing themselves in Earth Eternal."

I’m Andrew Sipotz, the Lead Designer on Earth Eternal. In a nutshell,
my job is to make Earth Eternal as much fun as it can possibly be!
I’ve been part of the Earth Eternal team for nearly 2 years.
I’m super excited to be bringing Earth Eternal to Japan and we have some great stuff planned for the game!

As the Lead Designer it’s my job to oversee the gameplay in Earth Eternal.
From quests to dungeons, sweet new weapons and powerful armor, I make sure the game keeps on being fun and balanced.
I also provide direction for the future of the game, planning out fun new features and incorporating ideas from the players.

Nice to meet you I am "Yocky".

In IKIMONOGATARI, I have handled the 3D game model's design, to the material for the flash movie, to say nothing of the character illustration, and the image illustration in the Japanese version.

Of IKIMONOGATARI and such...
First though, it was "EARTH ETERNAL" like the original title.
It was in the first office of Mr. Sankando that I heard the story in the beginning.
As much as one year has already passed there ・・・ It is quick that time passes.


Anyway, there "To what visual style do you make it when re-imagining it in a Japanese version?" A discussion was had.


As the story goes, there were not thoughts like "Let's make it to the picture like this artist's style or this well known genre." or "Let's go with this style because it sells." I was very glad about that of all the various things that were talked about.

This is very unusual in the game scene in Japan today.

Moreover, it was said, "I wanted to put individuality into the design that hadn't been seen before, and want to make it a friendly, familiar place".

… It is difficult.


Being unique and somehow familiar is sort of a contradiction.

However, I thought that it was work that was very challenging and was excited by this.


And this is where the battle truly began.
I think I will explain by showing the twisting, turning paths the design images took.

First of all, I drew by having the full freedom by assuming publishing illustration.

… Yes. It is very eerie having all these separate heads and bodies.

It is trying to catch the emotion and that atmosphere.

Also, what the Japanese market has done before.

There was an idea of doing the characters tall and stylish like JRPGs, too.

However, though we became distressed that the story that it might not be possible to actually render with these ideas‥

(The creature with blue skin: One has to admit he is stylish for a moment.)


Next is ..this...

The body has a considerably more approachable feeling now.

However, this is still not quite right as it looks like a "certain animal thing" title.

Isn't it comparatively good? There's a story about this:
However, it became disliked by the owner because of the feeling "It is not currently easily familiar".
There was the thought that "It might be different if there was some hair", too.
(It is necessary to think about the correspondence with 3D models in the game.)

I still get ups and downs when seeing this now.
"It is friendly" might be difficult to say for the atmosphere right at the moment.


Well, there will be a continuation next time because this entry has become, indeed, long though still various pictures are available to dash out.

IKIMONOGATARI Symposium Today Now Open!
It is the turn everyone's been waiting for, of GM Fangren, who is a GM and Fangren.

Very much today!

It is a symposium for media of IKIMONOGATARI so that many people may learn the game.

It is a meeting for the online gaming press, to discuss the charm of the game.

Because the content of the symposium is fairly detailed, and it's sure to be discussed in wonderful articles from the press, we will not discuss it in detail here. (Please continue to tell the press by any means.)

The voices of animals of this work IKIMONOGATARI use the voice of radio actors in Japan.

In Former-Money's cat opinion and Mr./Ms. Tanaka's rat opinion, in it, the face is already instinctive and the loveliness.
